Torrance Cup

The George Watson's College Golf Club Championship Cup was donated in 1933 by TA (Tony) Torrance and is known as the Torrance Cup. It is competed for by pupils at George Watson's College as the school golf championship.

TA Torrance was one of 2 brothers who played for Great Britain & Ireland against the USA in the Walker Cup. WB Torrance played in the first ever match in 1922 at Long Island, New York and TA played in the 3rd match at Garden City, also in New York in 1924. In 1932, TA Torrance returned to the USA as the Captain of the GB&I Walker Cup team at Brookline, Massachusetts.

A renowned golfer and friend of the great amateur Bobby Jones, it is said that Torrance and Jones came up with the idea of limiting the number of clubs allowed after seeing caddies carrying over 20 clubs. They recommended it to the R&A, of which Torrance was a member and shortly afterwards the limit of 14 clubs was introduced, which is still used today. He is also responsible for entering Watson's into their first Halford Hewitt in 1934, where they reached the final with a team including the Torrances and fellow Scotland Internationalists J Brock and RA McKinna.

The year after his Walker Cup captaincy he donated the Torrance Cup and given his stature in the game, it is fitting that the first winner was AS Flockhart who defended it in 1934 and then went on to become Scottish Amateur Champion in 1948.

Since then it has been won by another Walker Cup player John R Cater in 1937 and former champions also include 3 Scottish Internationalists, 3 Scottish Boy Internationalists, a British Boys Champion, several Lothians Champions and a Captain of the R&A. See if you can find them on the Honours page.

Many GWC champions have gone on to represent the Watsonian Golf Club with honour, including 12 who have won the Halford Hewitt (H), 10 who have won the WGC Gold Medal (G), 7 who have won both and 6 Club Captains (C). Will you be next?

2010 Qualifying

The qualifying took place for the School Golf Championship on Friday 23rd April at Swanston Golf Club. We were fortunate in that the travel chaos caused by the volcanic ash did not affect us too much and we managed to have 35 kids playing on the day. The conditions were challenging: cold and wet and Swanston's tight fairways, small greens (and gorse!) provided a stiff challenge to the scoring. There were 4 competitions on the day:

Girls
In the girls competition 4 girls competed and they played the par 3 Templar course - Ailsa Small narrowly defeated Claire Errington (both girls shot 38 and Ailsa won on countback).

Boys
All 31 boys played the main Swanston course and the results were as follows:

S1 - S3 Scratch competition: Daniel Cain (81), Duncan Cockburn (82), Matthew Little (89)

S1 - S6 Handicap competition: Daniel Cain (81-16=65), Chris Allison (78-12=66), Matthew Little(89-22=67)

S1 - S6 Scratch competition: David Crummey (73), Adam Robertson (76), Drew Anderson (76)
